HOW TO ELIMINATE DOG ODOURS FROM YOUR CARPET WITH THESE SIMPLE TECHNIQUES

01 November 2023

By Karen North

If you are long term clients of ours, you will know that we are enthusiastic dog owners!  Meet Shadow our Siberian Husky, he sheds twice a year so we are constantly vacuuming the house but we need to groom him professionally too at least twice yearly.  As we have rescued quite a few dogs over the years, people often ask us how do you keep your carpet clean and fresh with all those dogs?? Our extraction machine is used at least twice a year to extensively deep clean our carpets.

If you are a dog owner yourself, you will be undoubtedly aware that dogs can bring unwanted odours into our homes. One of the most common challenges is the lingering smell in your carpets. Whether it’s from muddy paws, toilet accidents, or simply your pet’s natural scent, eliminating that doggy odour can be quite a task. However, fear not, as we’re here to guide you through various methods to restore freshness to your carpet and create a pleasant environment for you and your four-legged family member.

HOME REMEDIES FOR GETTING RID OF UNWANTED ODOURS TO YOUR CARPET

If you’re struggling with persistent dog smell in your carpet, try these simple steps to eliminate the odour.

Start by thoroughly vacuuming your carpet using a vacuum cleaner with a HEPA filter. This will help remove loose dirt, pet hair, and odour-causing particles trapped in the carpet fibres.
Vacuuming should be part of your regular cleaning regime to keep your carpet smelling fresh and clean.
By following these steps, you can easily get rid of unpleasant dog smells from your carpet and keep your home smelling fresh.

For tough odours, mix equal parts of water and white vinegar in a spray bottle and lightly mist your carpet. Avoid over-saturating the carpet; a light misting is sufficient. Allow the carpet to dry naturally, and as it dries, the vinegar’s scent will dissipate taking the doggy smell with it. However, before applying it to a more extensive area, test a small, hidden region of your carpet to make sure it doesn’t alter the colour or fabric.

If you’re a pet owner, you know how challenging it can be to keep your carpets smelling clean and fresh. Luckily, there are specialised pet-friendly carpet fresheners available on the market that combat pet odours temporarily. These products are easy to use – just follow the manufacturer’s instructions for application. Many of them can be sprinkled on the carpet, left for a specified time, and then vacuumed up, leaving your carpet smelling delightful and safe for your pets.

HANDY TIPS TO REDUCE DOG SMELL IN YOUR HOME
Nobody wants their house to smell like wet dog. To avoid this, it’s better to prevent it. Here are some ways to keep the smell at bay:

  • Give your dog a regular bath and grooming.
  • Use pet-friendly shampoo and grooming products.
  • Brush your dog’s fur often to prevent it from getting caught in your carpet fibres.

LET THE FRESH AIR IN
Don’t Forget to Ventilate!  Proper ventilation is crucial in maintaining a pleasant, fresh scent in your home. It may seem obvious, but allowing fresh air to circulate through your home by opening windows and doors is incredibly helpful in removing any lingering odours and replacing them with clean, outdoor air.

HIRE A PROFESSIONAL
Although home remedies can be useful, sometimes it’s better to leave the job to the experts. A reliable carpet cleaning company has the knowledge, tools, and pet-friendly cleaning solutions to successfully eliminate persistent dog odours from your carpet. To maintain a fresh-smelling house, it’s recommended to schedule a professional carpet cleaning service annually or as needed. We are also trained to identify staining that may not be visible to you.  For example, by using UV technology and inspecting under the carpet itself.  If the pet stain has penetrated right through the carpet it will need treating on the underside too and possibly the replacement of the underlay.  With our inspection and survey we will quickly identify any potential problems that may hinder the cleaning process.

RESULTS SPEAK FOR THEMSELVES
With the right techniques and preventive measures, getting rid of the smell of your furry friend from your carpet is manageable. Regular cleaning and maintenance, along with a few simple home remedies can help make your home a pleasant and odour-free environment for both you and your dog. Keep in mind that a clean carpet enhances the overall ambiance of your home and contributes to a healthier living space for everyone. It also will be the first thing that a potential buyer or renter of your property will notice as soon as they enter your front door.
